Default E36 328is hard to shift... sometimes

I picked up a 1998 328is a couple weeks ago for a winter car and I'm loving it. Makes me think a B3 might make a good future purchase!

Anyway, the car shifts nicely under light acceleration, but under hard acceleration or downshifting it doesn't want to go into gear without a blip on the throttle.

Any ideas why?

Sounds like it could come from a clogged transmission servo, result of gummy residue from lack of respecting oil/filter replacement recommendations.

Check with an auto tranny specialist, perhaps they can replace the oil and filter while running a flush of the system.

Indeed, that would of been a good idea!

Checking for heavy tranny oil (thick) or low level would be the first places to start.

All gears or only certain ones? Weak syncro(s)?

My 5spd swapped Aristo is a bit difficult when shifting from 3-2, but otherwise is pretty good. If I double clutch it's definitely easier. The syncro is known to be weak on the R154 transmissions, so I'm not surprised I'm having a bit of trouble. Obviously, this doesn't exactly pertain to your vehicle, but thought I'd post it if you are having a similar issue

It's in all gears, possibly 1st is the worst. I did wonder about the syncros
